Hello from the Czech Republic!
Your Gallivanting Girls here! Thanks for stopping by our blog.
So, we did a thing. A BIG thing. We packed our bags, said goodbye to South Africa (for now!), and hopped on a plane to start a new chapter in the heart of Europe: the Czech Republic! 🇨🇿
We’re lucky to have dual citizenship SA/CZ, which made this move a lot simpler than it would be for most people. And wow… what a whirlwind it’s been: cobblestone streets, delicious trdelník (chimney cake), and a whole lot of learning.
The contrast between South Africa and the Czech Republic? Let’s just say it’s like swapping a bakkie for a tram.
One of the biggest — and most liberating — differences is the sense of safety. In South Africa, security is always on our minds. Here? We can walk home at night without constantly looking over our shoulders. We can pop into a shop and leave our bags unattended. We’ve even seen parents leave their babies in prams outside a store. Freedom like this is life-changing!
South Africa:
- High crime rates
- Constant vigilance
- Security systems are a must
- Limited freedom of movement at night
Czech Republic:
- Low crime rates
- Relaxed atmosphere
- Safety is the norm
- Enjoying a stroll at night without worry
The Lifestyle
The pace of life here? Chef’s kiss. Leisurely mornings sipping coffee at charming street cafés, exploring stunning historical architecture, and soaking up a rich cultural scene. People actually take the time to enjoy life — and it’s infectious!
Street cafés are central to Czech life. Quick espresso, leisurely lunch, or an evening beer (or three!) — these spots are perfect for people-watching, soaking up the atmosphere, and connecting with friends (or making new ones).
The beer! South Africa has some great brews, but the Czech Republic is basically a national religion. Crisp, refreshing, and insanely affordable (cheaper than water).
Here are a few of our favourite things about living here:
- Public transport: Efficient, affordable, and gets us everywhere. We really don’t need a car.
- Architecture: Stunning historical buildings on every corner.
- Parks: Green spaces perfect for relaxing.
- Markets: Fresh produce, local crafts, vibrant atmosphere. Seasonal markets, especially Christmas, are incredible.
- Proximity to other European countries: Quick trips to Paris, Berlin, Vienna — yes, please!
The Realities
Of course, it’s not all sunshine and trdelník. Learning a new language is tough, bureaucracy is… frustrating, and paperwork here is very “old school.” But the positives far outweigh the negatives — we wouldn’t trade this experience for the world.
We’re still exploring the Czech Republic, visiting neighbouring countries, and learning about new cultures along the way.
Stay tuned for more working & travelling abroad adventures — with a lot of laughs thrown in!
